"Day of the Dead is a grass-roots celebration, something that people do because they love it, because they feel moved to do it, because they feel it's important... and it's a gift to the community."
--Starhawk, author, activist, and Day of the Dead participant

ALTARS

Making an altar for a loved one that has passed away can be a cathartic and healing experience that honors both the celebration of life and the grieving of death. If you would like to create a personal altar (roughly 1x1 foot) please read guidelines below and come to the Marigold Project information table near the Garfield Park club house on 11/2 before setting up.

Garfield Park Guidelines for Altaristas (altar artists):

Dia de los Muertos is a unique and transformative community event and we are grateful for your
collaboration and creativity. We thank you in advance for following these rules that were set up by
the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department (SFRP) to ensure the success and sustainability
of the event.

SET UP on 11/2: Begins and 12noon. Please check in at Marigold Project table at the Garfield Park
Clubhouse table when you arrive.

CLEAN UP on 11/2: Begins at 11:00pm. You must remove your altars that night. Marigold Project
is not responsible for anything left at the park past 11pm. We will have garbage bags available at
the Marigold Project table.

Amplified music/sound: Amplified sound is not allowed without a permit. Permit costs are
covered by altaristas. This rule is strictly enforced.

Electricity: Marigold Project/Garfield Park cannot supply electricity. Altaristas that need power
must bring a silent generator. Please notify us if you will be brining a generator.

Fire: Only GLASS candles are allowed. No fire dancing or fire arts are allowed at the park.

Water: Each altar needs to have a reserve of one gallon of water to use in a fire emergency. We
encourage altaristas (or your helpers) to stay near your altar to ensure fire safety.

Digging: Please do not dig with a shovel or rebar into the grass anywhere at Garfield Park. There is
a sensitive sprinkler system that is positioned 6 inches below the grass.

Alcohol and Smoking: Alcohol and smoking are not allowed on the park premises.

Trash and Recycling: Please take everything home with you, including any large platforms,
branches, supplies, etc. We will get fined for anything left on the street or park.

Playground: Only children and supervising adults are allowed into the playground area. No altars
or candles in the playground.

Information Table: The Marigold Project information table will be located outside the club house
from 12noon-midnite.

Questions: All concerns from police, rangers, guards or any attendee can be addressed at the
Marigold Project information table.

Your altar is your responsibility. Marigold Project is not responsible for any personal items that
may be lost or stolen during the event and encourage altaristas to check in on their altars throughout
the night.
